9 Things to Do in El Puerto de la Cruz –

sea water swimming pool, swimming pool, lago martiánez

If you’re looking for a blend of culture, natural beauty, and relaxing experiences in Tenerife, then Puerto de la Cruz is a must-visit. I’ve spent a lot of time exploring this charming coastal town, and it never fails to surprise me with its mix of laid-back vibes and hidden gems.

It’s one of those places where you can slow down, enjoy the surroundings, and still find plenty to do, whether you’re a first-time visitor or you’ve been here before.

Explore Loro Parque – A World-Class Zoo

Without a doubt, Loro Parque is one of the top attractions in Puerto de la Cruz. It’s not just your regular zoo—Loro Parque has been rated as one of the best zoos in the world, and trust me, it’s easy to see why.

From a personal standpoint, this park is more than just about seeing animals; it’s an immersive experience with its tropical gardens, animal shows, and amazing exhibits. I recommend setting aside a full day to explore everything here, from the impressive penguin enclosure to the colourful collection of parrots.

One of the highlights for me was watching the dolphins and orcas perform. The trainers really show their bond with these magnificent animals, and it’s both educational and entertaining. If you’re a wildlife lover, this should be high on your list of things to do in Puerto de la Cruz.

Unwind at Playa Jardín

When it comes to beaches, Playa Jardín is my personal favourite in Puerto de la Cruz. Designed by the renowned artist César Manrique, this black-sand beach is not just a spot to soak up the sun but also a stunning place to admire Manrique’s artistic touches.

There are lush gardens with tropical plants, waterfalls, and plenty of areas to relax.

The beach itself is ideal for families, with calm waters perfect for swimming. You’ll find amenities like sunbeds, showers, and nearby restaurants where you can grab lunch or a cold drink. This is one of those places where you can easily spend the whole day.

Visit Playa Martiánez for Surfing or Sunbathing

Another beach worth visiting is Playa Martiánez. This one is a bit smaller than Playa Jardín and has a wilder, more rugged feel to it. It’s a black-sand beach that’s popular with surfers because of its strong waves. Even if you’re not into surfing, it’s a great spot to sit back and enjoy the natural beauty of the coastline.

Although it’s not the best beach for lounging all day, if you enjoy a more rustic, natural beach experience or love watching surfers in action, this is the place for you. It’s also close to Lago Martiánez, which is my next recommendation!

Relax at Lago Martiánez – A Seawater Pool Complex

For a more relaxed beachside experience, I highly recommend Lago Martiánez, which is a beautiful seawater pool complex designed by César Manrique.

This spot combines art and nature perfectly, and it’s a fantastic alternative if the ocean waves are too strong for swimming.

There are several pools, some with artificial geysers, surrounded by sunbeds and lush greenery. It’s a perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon—whether you want to swim, read a book, or enjoy the view of Mount Teide in the background.

The entrance fee is very affordable, and you can even get a ticket that includes lunch, so you can just relax for the entire day.

Botanical Gardens

Whenever I want a peaceful escape, I head to the Botanical Gardens (Jardín Botánico). This is one of the most serene places in Puerto de la Cruz, and I always find something new to admire with each visit. The garden is home to a vast collection of exotic plants, trees, and flowers, many of which you won’t find anywhere else in Tenerife.

Whether you’re a botany enthusiast or just looking for a quiet spot to relax, this is a must-visit. It’s especially nice during the afternoon when the sunlight filters through the trees, creating a peaceful ambiance.

Take a Stroll Around Plaza del Charco

If you’re a fan of local culture like I am, you’ll love Plaza del Charco. This lively square is the heart of Puerto de la Cruz, and it’s surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and ice cream shops. I always recommend stopping by for a coffee or a snack and simply enjoying the atmosphere.

This area is particularly lovely in the evenings when the lights come on, and you can feel the energy of the town as locals and tourists mingle. It’s one of those places that gives you a real feel of Puerto de la Cruz.

Parque Taoro

For those who enjoy a bit of light exercise with a rewarding view, I suggest visiting Parque Taoro. The park is set on a hill, and the climb involves a lot of steps, but the panoramic view of Puerto de la Cruz from the top is absolutely worth it.

Along the way, you’ll pass small waterfalls and landscaped gardens, which provide plenty of opportunities to stop and rest (or take pictures!). Once at the top, you can grab a drink at the cafe and take in the stunning scenery.

Playa Bollullo

If you’re feeling adventurous, one of the best things to do is to take the hike from Puerto de la Cruz to Playa Bollullo, a more secluded black-sand beach.

The walk is a bit challenging in places but offers spectacular views of the coastline. Playa Bollullo is less crowded compared to other beaches, making it ideal for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle.

I always recommend doing this hike in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun. And don’t forget to pack some water and a snack because there aren’t many facilities once you get to the beach.

Enjoy a Coastal Walk on the Rambla de Castro

If you love nature walks as much as I do, the Rambla de Castro is a must-visit. This coastal path offers some of the most stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding countryside.

The walk itself is quite easy and takes about two and a half hours round-trip. Along the way, you’ll pass beautiful palm groves, historic sites, and dramatic cliffs.

It’s a fantastic way to enjoy Tenerife’s natural beauty while getting a bit of exercise. Make sure to bring your camera, as you’ll want to capture the incredible views.
